Changing an Inventory Device Type

The Inventory device type drop-down list on the General tab of the inventory device properties enables you to change the type of an inventory device. When you change the type assigned to an inventory device, you may affect the license compliance calculations of your enterprise. For example, your organization may have different license rules for virtual machines and standard computers.

Changes that you make to the inventory devices may be overwritten by the next inventory import process. For example, if you change the type of an inventory device from Virtual Machine to Computer, it would be changed back to VM Machine when the next inventory import is run. You must consider the following points when changing the type of an inventory device:

Computer Virtual Machine or VM Host You may need establish a link between virtual machine and virtual host.
Virtual Machine Computer or VM Host IT Asset Management deletes the virtual machine properties of the inventory device.
VM Host Computer or Virtual Machine IT Asset Management deletes the links between the host and any related virtual machines.

If the host was registered, any linked virtual machines to this host will get the status New, unless they are directly linked to an asset.
