VMware Inventory

FlexNet Manager Suite 2019 R2 (On-Premises Edition)

The Discovery & Inventory > VMware Inventory page (in the Inventory group) lists the VMware vSphere and vCenter application inventory for your enterprise. A vCenter server can manage one or more hosts running vSphere hypervisors. Each vSphere hypervisor can run one or more virtual machines.

You can perform the following actions on a VMware inventory records:
  • Search VMware inventory records: For more information about using lists, filters, and other UI options, see the topics under Using Lists in FlexNet Manager Suite.
  • View VMware application properties: Click the Application link to view the application properties. For more information about application properties, see Application Properties.
  • View or change the properties of a VMware host instance: You can click the VMware host link under the Installed on column to view its properties. For more information about inventory device properties, see Inventory Device Properties.
  • Create a management view: The Save view as feature of FlexNet Manager Suite enables you to create customized management views of a page by saving the applied user interface settings. For more information, see Creating Management Views.

This page displays the following columns (listed alphabetically). Some columns are displayed by default and others can be displayed through the column chooser. To manage columns and other UI options, see the topics under Managing Columns in a Table.

Table 1. Properties listed on the VMware Inventory page:
Property Description
Application
The application's name, which may be:
  • Set by the Application Recognition Library (for applications with Source: Flexera), and not editable
  • Derived from the evidence values for Product, Version, and Edition properties (when generated by FlexNet Manager Suite), and editable to suit your corporate standards.

You can edit this on the General tab of the application properties when Local is displayed in the Source column (which means the application was added manually by an operator).

Capacity

Specifies the total number of licenses permitted by a key. For example, a value 2 in this field specifies that you can install two licenses with one key.

Not editable.

Evaluation

Specifies if the installed application is linked only to an evaluation license.

Not editable.

Evaluation expiry date

The date when the evaluation version of the license expires. This date may still be displayed for a full license, but only when an associated evaluation period has not yet expired (you may be entitled to increased functionality under the evaluation license). Once the evaluation period is over, the expiry date is no longer shown for full licenses. However, for evaluation licenses:
  • A future date reminds you of the approaching end of an evaluation period.
  • If the evaluation period is already over, a past date is displayed (along with an alert against the license key). There should be no consumption against an expired evaluation license.

Not editable.

Installed on The name of the VMware host where the application is installed. You may click the device name to navigate to its inventory device properties for more details. This value is only available when vCenter inventory has been returned from the applicable vCenter server.

Keys assigned

Specifies the total number of keys assigned to this application.

Not editable.

License cost unit

Specifies the cost unit for a license. The license consumption depends on the cost unit. For example, if the cost unit is server, one license is consumed per server installation and if the license cost unit is cpuPackage, one license is consumed per CPU.

Not editable.

License key

The license key consumed by the application.

Not editable.

License type

The kind of license, which determines what properties are available for the license, and how compliance is calculated for the license. For details of an individual license type, please see the appropriate entry in the glossary.

Editable in the License type field in the Identification tab of the license properties.

Managed by
The name of the vCenter application that is managing this appliance.
Tip: This value is blank in the following cases:
  • The inventory item is for a vSphere hypervisor that is not managed by vCenter (such stand-alone hypervisors, and their related virtual machines, are separately inventoried, independently of vCenter)
  • The inventory item is for vCenter itself, which cannot be managed by any other vCenter machine.

Not editable.

No. of processors

The total number of processors installed in a physical inventory device, or logical processors assigned to a virtual machine.

Populated and (by default) updated by inventory imports, this field in the Hardware tab of the inventory device properties can be overridden with a manually entered value (see Hardware Tab). Overridden values are no longer updated by incoming inventory.

vCenter server

The machine name or IP address of the vCenter computer that is managing this appliance.
Tip: This value is blank in the following cases:
  • The inventory item is for a vSphere hypervisor that is not managed by vCenter (such stand-alone hypervisors, and their related virtual machines, are separately inventoried, independently of vCenter)
  • The inventory item is for vCenter itself, which cannot be managed by any other vCenter appliance.

Editable in the General tab of the inventory device properties.
