Making License Allocations

FlexNet Manager Suite 2019 R2 (On-Premises Edition)

Make allocations to permanently tie the individual inventory devices or users to this license, whether they have been automatically listed here or not. You may also use allocations to include systems that cannot be inventoried.

The following points should be considered while allocating licenses:
  • Allocations are managed manually: they stay in place until you remove them. In cases where there may be alternative licenses to choose from, allocations ensure that the inventory devices or users receiving them will consume from this allocated license (and not from any other).
  • You can decide whether allocations on this license should always count as consumption, or should function just as simple allotments, with consumption still determined by inventory data.
  • If you make an allocation to a VM host, it automatically includes all the virtual machines running on that host server. For more information, refer back to Consumption Tab.
  • You cannot manually allocate inventory devices or users to SAP Named User licenses.

Tip: If you make allocations to the same user or inventory device from multiple licenses that cover the same applications, FlexNet Manager Suite uses the license with the least number of products linked to the license (for example, a single-product license rather than a multi-product license); and thereafter, the allocation most recently made.
It is important to check the status of the Allocations consume license entitlements option before you make allocations (see License Consumption Rules).

To make allocations:

  1. Navigate to the Consumption tab of the license properties.
  2. For any unallocated inventory device or user record appearing in the Related user or Related devices list (depending on license type), set the selection check box (at the left of each row) for the row(s) in question, and select the appropriate value from the Allocate drop-down button above the listing. To know more about the options available in this drop-down button, see Allocation Type.
Because these users or inventory devices are already linked to the license, and their license consumption was calculated at the last compliance calculation, setting any type of allocation does not change consumption counts.
  3. For an inventory device or user not already listed, use the search field above the list.
For more detail on using the fly-down search, see To Use a Fly-Down.
Note: When FlexNet Manager Suite is responsible for sub-capacity PVU calculations (see IBM PVU Scanning), and this license is an IBM PVU license type, the fly-down list may include inventory devices with an Archived status. These have no current consumption, and are in transition, awaiting deletion. They are currently held because of their historical impact on the retrospective calculation of sub-capacity points for this license, and you may therefore wish to allocate these inventory devices to the license.
Inventory devices or users added manually are automatically marked as Allocated in the list. The allocation type can be changed by using the Allocate drop-down button.
Tip: If an inventory device or user is not marked as an allocation, and does not appear in the next inventory import, it is removed from this list at the next compliance calculation.
  4. To save your changes to the database, click Save.
Although the allocation is reflected on the Compliance tab after your save, the changes are only reflected in consumption figures from the next compliance calculation.
