Entering Summary Information Stream Data

InstallShield 12

Project-Specific

PROJECT

This information applies to the following project types:

Windows Installer (MSI) databases are stored as COM structured storage files that generally contain a summary information stream. To update information in the Summary panel for your .msi or .msm file, set the Summary Information Stream properties. The Summary Information Stream property sheet contains the following properties:

Summary Information Stream Property Fields

Property

Description

Title

This field contains the type of setup that is being created, such as an Installation Database. Information entered in this field appears when a user right-clicks on your .msi file, selects Properties, and clicks the Summary tab.

Subject

Enter the name of the software application for which you are creating an installation.

Author

Specify your name or the name of the person who is creating the setup package. When you build a release, the author's name supplies the value for the Author field in the Summary Information Stream.

Keywords

Type in any keywords that describe your product. Separate multiple keywords with a semicolon. Information entered into this field is displayed when an end user right-clicks on an .msi file, selects Properties, and clicks the Summary tab.

Package Code

The package code is the globally unique identifier (GUID) for your setup package. Click the generate GUID button to change the default GUID provided by InstallShield.

Note

Because Windows Installer requires any two MSI databases with identical package codes to have identical contents, you should change the package code before releasing a modified package. In the Releases view, you can specify that you want to generate a new package code every time you build a release.

Template Summary

Use this property to set conditions on the installation of your product based on the user's processor type. See Using the Template Summary Property for more information.

Comments

Provide any comments about your product in this field.

Schema

The Schema property contains the minimum installer version—as an integer—required for your installation package. For example if your package requires at least the 1.0 version of the installer, set this property to 100.

If the end user's system has a Windows Installer version earlier than the minimum requirement specified in the Schema property—for example, if you specify a Schema value of 120 and the user has Windows Installer version 1.0—the installation displays an error message and exits.

Require Administrative Privileges

Specify whether your .msi package requires administrative privileges for the execute sequence of your installation. The default is Yes.

If you set this to No, InstallShield sets bit 3 in the Word Count Summary property to indicate that elevated privileges are not required to install the .msi package. Note that if you select No but your .msi package tries to perform a task for which it does not have adequate privileges, Windows Installer may display a run-time error.

This setting applies to installations that are run with Windows Installer 4.0 on Windows Vista systems. Earlier versions of Windows Installer ignore this setting.

Note that an end user's installation experience is more secure when installations are run with only the permissions that they need. Unless an application is designed to be run only by system administrators, it should be run with the least privilege.

To learn how this setting and other InstallShield settings affect whether Windows Vista displays a User Account Control prompt to elevate privileges, see Minimizing the Number of User Account Control Prompts During Installation.
