Configuring a Release that Includes Setup Prerequisites

This information applies to Windows Installer projects.

When you package an installation that includes setup prerequisites, you can use any one of the following methods for supplying the prerequisite files to end users:

Store the setup prerequisite files on the source media.

Compress the setup prerequisite files into Setup.exe, to be extracted at run time, as needed.

If needed, your installation can download the setup prerequisite files included in your project from the URL specified in the setup prerequisite (.prq) file for each prerequisite.

You can specify different methods for each setup prerequisite in your project. To learn more, see Specifying a Location for a Specific Setup Prerequisite.

You can also override individual methods at the release level if you want all of the prerequisites in a release to be available through the same method. For more information, see Specifying the Location for Setup Prerequisites at the Release Level.

You can configure a setup prerequisite so that it is installed either before or after any installation of the Windows Installer engine and the .NET Framework. For more information, see Specifying Parameters for Installing a Prerequisite.
